DJ Center- You Got the Love feat Gretchen Parlato (Sam Champ Remix)

DJ Center - Everything In Time Remixed

Today is the first in a series of free downloads from the forthcoming, Everything in Time Remixed project, coming to your digital player this October.

Remixes are always refreshing to me as I get to see how other folks re-interpret the works. An all-star remix cast formed over the course of the last year to re-work songs from Everything in Time. That lineup included- DJ Spinna, Waajeed, J.Rawls, DJ OBaH, Sam Champ, Captain Planet, DJ Eleven and others.

You Got the Love” is one of my favorite Rufus and Chaka Khan tunes and Gretchen Parlato and I had a ball paying tribute with our cover of the song from my LP. Now, Sam Champ brings a completely unique and lovely flavor to the song on his remix. Get it for free for the next week below.

One for Gil- A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron (Download)

DJ Center - One for Gil

*All Vinyl Mix  | Cover Artwork by Haylow for the Roy Ayers Project

It’s been just over three weeks since Gil’s passing. Like all death, it is extremely hard to initially get the news, but as time goes on, we find ways to move on and the reality of someone passing fades, deep into our memories.

Well, to me, this one is different. The reality of Gil’s passing and the void that has been left with his absence, has been hanging over me since Friday, May 27th. Gil had a voice and spirit like no other- beautiful, soulful and real, with every word he spoke. Whether it was through his critique of America and the ‘deals in back alleys where politicians often hide’ or his call to unify the Black community, shining light on the injustices done to people of color, Gil did it like no other and to the death.

Somethin’ for the Summer – Eric Roberson feat Chubb Rock

Summertime (So Hot)

I love this record.

It just feels right! One of my all time favorite dance floor classics, “Give me the Night“, flipped so lovely. The fact that Erro enlisted Chubb Rock for mic duties (!!!) means instant CLASSIC.  Brooklyn, BBQ, summer time anthem bizness…

DJ Center + DJ Spinna – In a Song Release Party Download

DJ Spinna + DJ Center in the Crates

Late last March, DJ Spinna and I got together in NYC to celebrate the vinyl release of “In a Song” from the “Everything in Time” album.

Folks came out to boogie with us in the outrageous space that is Mono+Mono.  Loft ceilings, vintage wood detail, photos of Jazz legends, analog equipment and a backdrop of 30,000 LPs provided the warm canvas for the music that night.

As our way of saying thank you, you’ll find each of our DJ sets from that night, ready for download below.

If you couldn’t make the jam that night, Daniel Littlewood and Charis Shafer captured some of the visuals in the video. Enjoy!

Yesking X Honey Honey – Little Toy Gun

Yesking

Been running this number since Mark Rae blessed me with it sometime last year. Constant play at the sets and featured it on a mix I did for KCRW in Los Angeles. Now the good people at Yesking (big up the General, Rhys Adams) have made this tasty exclusive available for free. Grab it before the SoundCloud download limit expires here. Boom!

Feel What I’m Feelin’- Jazz (in the Color Purple) Mix

DJ Center - Feel What I'm Feelin'

This is an oldie but a goodie- I cut this Jazz session back in 2005. It appeared as disc 2 on the double CD release, “Feel What I’m Feelin’“.

Long out of print, this mix has traveled to places and spaces as far and wide as Tokyo, Japan and London, England. For weeks it ran in its entirety on ScannerFM, 100.5 in Barcelona and it has received praise from some of the great artists that it pays homage to- Gary Bartz and Junior Mance, respectively.

For me, it was about the music- how much it spoke without saying a word. The blues roots, the spiritual jazz tributes and the clear connections to the modern day architects of sampling- it was all in there. It was a mix highlighting the genius and beauty of the artists and tunes you hear, yet weaving them together as I would any of my DJ sets.

To date, I’m not aware of any other mixes with the same approach or feel and for me, this project was a labor of love.

Hope it leaves you feelin’ as good as it left me when I put it together.

Sketches of Spain- Live in Barcelona 2006

DJ Center - Live at Sala Apolo (Barcelona, ES)

Back in September of 2006, I toured Europe stopping in Barcelona, Spain to play the legendary Powder Room night at Sala Apolo (Big up Mr. Wakanda, D2D2 and crew). I arrived a couple days before my gig with some time to soak up the local flavor. On that visit, I met an incredible DJ from São Paulo, Brazil named DJ Paulão. We would co-headline the next night together at Sala Apolo, but that night he had a solo set at an underground club in the heart of the downtown.

Hanging at his set the night before the gig and hearing him rock what seemed like all the Brazilians living in the city was nothing short of magical. That set was the perfect inspiration leading to the party rocking we would do together the next night at Sala Apolo. Here’s my set from Barcelona, immediately following my man Paulão. Enjoy.
