The importance of Vinyl in 2011

Center Bumps

Not a day goes by when I don’t hear someone talking or writing about how no one knows what is going on with the music industry. The future of music and how we will access it remains a question mark. These are some bugged times indeed.

The thing that is for sure is that most DJs (myself included) are now spinning in clubs with their laptops or aren’t carrying the amount of records they once were (I’ve witnessed most selectors in Europe being happy to rock off of CDs on a nice pair of CDJs).

In the ’90s, the “Save the Vinyl” movement was created and it’s logo (two hands holding a piece of wax) was found on the back of many albums during that era. There was a unity amongst vinyl supporters, we would not let the format die. And we were successful. I once heard from some record label friends that DJs were the ones keeping new releases from being printed strictly on CD during that era.

The question of the existence of wax remains today. Rumors I’ve heard range from major labels pressing under 400 units of LPs to those that say vinyl sales are actually up (at least for the indie rock genre).

Without going into diatribe and the politics that we’ve all heard on why things are the way they are, I believe in a few things-

Music on vinyl sounds its absolute best. It’s the fullest, warmest, thickest, most bottom heavy, soothing sound to the ears that can be produced! If you LOVE music, you would love it most by feeling it as it spins round and round on your turntable. Music on vinyl has feeling.

My mantra:

If I love the tune- I need it on vinyl and still go out in search of new music on wax. Even if I already have a nice sounding mp3 copy, I need something that I can put on to fully appreciate the depth of the musical vibe. It’s hard to replicate feeling and vibrations that come out your speakers. To me, this is important especially in the confines of my own home. This is where I decompress and soak up new inspiration to take out to the world. Everybody’s got their thing, to me it’s about listening to vinyl to nurture the spirit.  One day, I will be able to pass on my collection and the music will remain longer than my lifetime.

Expect more releases on vinyl from me this year. It’s good for the soul and I’m blessed and happy to be contributing to the movement that has yet and most likely will not die.
